IN THE MAKING: Networking Whore

In social careers such as public relations, business, fashion, entertainment and so forth, attending networking events and mixers are insanely important when trying to get yourself exposed. Meeting professionals and mingling with the crowd is an essential piece for success in these types of industries.

So how do you get invitations to these chic and high-end events to network with the crème of the crème? You put in a lot of bitch work. In order to achieve success you must put in time i

As a college student, I milk every opportunity as much as I can. I send numerous emails to PR firms, event production firms, fashion show organizers,  and local fashion magazines, asking them if there are any inernship or volunteer opportunities (free help is usually never rejected). This is the initial start of most of my relationships. As a volunteer you are not only granted access to the event but you are also given the  opportunity to meet attendees and to network with other volunteers that have your same mindset, and that may give you a lead to another event. Soon after volunteering, you will learn who is who, and start to surround yourself with the right people.

Research is a HUGE part of networking. Sign up to every newsletter you can, read local event blogs, read the social column in the newspaper, be on top of your social media networks, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, as well as attend as many events as possible, but do not just attend the events make sure there is a purpose. Make  it a point to collect as many business cards as possible (remember to follow-up the next day, this shows people you are eager to work). Stay focused during these events, you’re not only there for the comp drinks, but to meet other people.

Do NOT be afraid to just walk up to someone that seems too important to speak with. Keep in mind, at the end of the day they’re just PEOPLE! So get over the shyness now, or switch careers, no one feels bad for you on this note. Also, when introducing yourself you must be confident and professional to be taken serious (rememeber about firm hand shakes and looking directly at the persons eyes).

It’s also always great to go to these events with a fellow classmate or friend that shares your same interest in careers. The buddy system at events like this keep you more at ease, and you can motivate each other to go up to others to mingle.

All in all, get up, go places and get to know faces. Through networking and research I have gotten internships and built relationships as well as my confidence, and it has helped me become more poised. Being able to name drop will help you in the long run, but you won’t be able to do this without a little work from your end.

Never forget to make sure to always have these handy when networking:
Mints
Business Cards
Camera/Camera Phone
Confidence

It’s not what you know but who you know, and who knows you… Get out there and shine social butterflies!
