In spirits of the New Year, I sat down to plot my action plan in figuring out what I’m going to do with my life for the next 12 months. Asides from the regular do well in school, lose 15 pounds, get at least 6 hours of sleep at night, this year is a special year for me. I’m taking the next full 12 months to prepare myself mentally, physically, financially and spiritually for MY year, which has not yet been decided, but I know is near, wait for it!

I’ve already sat down, made my list of goals and the whole when, where, how, why I have to get everything done. Of course, keeping my dreams and aspirations realistic and feasible, I have raised my bar so that I can fall on purpose and learn, so that I can take risks without regrets and so that I make sure I remind myself where I come from and never forget this struggle I have upon me.
Everyone interested in fashion, entertainment and glam automatically targets New York, LA, Miami and every other metropolitan city in the U.S. I live in Miami, and I’m already familiar with the socialites and glitz it has to offer. I want the challenge. I want what everyone wants but cannot have, so I chose my next destination to be New York City, the city that never sleeps and has NO mercy. Where every girl dreams of walking down the streets in Jimmy Choos, but more than half will never live to do. I want CEO’s, editors and “important” people to “belittle” me and slap me around, so that I can toughen my skin and be able to grow out of my shell.

In order to run, one must crawl then walk, then run a marathon for all I care. Living in Miami, a laid back city where the big heads come to vacation, I get away and get into whatever I set my mind to. I want to learn from the hard-knocks of life and I think New York can offer that, but to take full advantage one must prepare. In preparing for this, you have to have a good head screwed on, and realize that there are MILLIONS out there BETTER than you, and you have to highlight why you should be given a CHANCE to do anything. Forget the whole mentality of “my name is so and so and I deserve this and that because I’m hotshot back home.” I’ll be sure to send you a get well card after you hit that floor hard! Stay grounded, humble, focused, realistic and YOU and everything else will fall into place. Before you got there, it’s already been done and thought, so make sure you go with a plan to knock every thought and stay positive but modest in the process. Keep in mind, even the hot shots of the hotshots, really isn’t a hot shot at all, so keep it real, at the end of the day we’re all people. Do not take this as an intimidation, but rather as an eye opener to help you prepare for the storm. Earth takes the wrath of the storm to be able to reflect its rainbow at the end.

I’m still unsure as to when I want to make my move over there. I want to go for a full semester, have an internship and soak in the rigorous experience. I want to go to events, mingle with the crowd, be in the scene, ride a subway, I want it all. Currently, I have my plans set to go for the whole summer, but I had an epiphany today, and considered going for the fall semester. It’s a chunk of change, but I have half a year, a part-time job and spirit that with enough commitment and constant reminder of my purpose, it should not be a problem. Sure enough, I have people that support me and are willing to help me because they believe in me and know that I am capable of becoming something!

Right now, my life is set for that move and I have already networked with possible internship contacts from home through emails and inquired about their internship opportunities. Do not wait for last minute just because you do not live there. Never stop networking, never limit yourself, we live in a digital world! Tweet New Yorkers or LA-ers, email firms, designers, etc. CREATE YOUR OPPORTUNITIES. If you want it, you can have it.
